Enter a license plate and we'll find the VIN behind it, then tell you what the manufacturer actually built and whether there are open safety recalls on it.
The plate resolves through state vehicle records; everything after that comes from the NHTSA vPIC database and NHTSA’s recall campaigns — the US government’s own records, free and public.
Coverage is state by state and not every state is included, so a plate that fails here is not necessarily wrong. If you have the VIN, the VIN decoder skips this step entirely.
We do not show who owns a car. Personal information in vehicle records is protected by the Driver’s Privacy Protection Act, and nothing on this page will tell you anything about a person.
